Business Intelligence (BI) is a term used to define the art of pulling together, into one view, all the data required to make sound business decisions, regardless of where the data originates. ACG has been building Business Intelligence applications since 1987, before the term existed.  Back then, a BI project required building a data repository, as well as a custom front-end to access the data in a flexible and user-friendly format.

Today, data warehouses and data marts are built to house the data, and front-end tools, such as Oracle's Sales Analyzer, Hyperion Essbase, Oracle Discoverer and Financial Analyzer, Cognos' TM1 or BusinessObjects are used to access the data.

The simple truth is that simply slapping any front-end OLAP or BI reporting tool on your data warehouse or data mart may not get the job done. Each BI tool has its strengths and weaknesses and none of them will provide even an adequate solution right out of the box.
