Building a Data Warehouse on a Dot Com Budget
(Originally presented at IOUG Live 2002)

In the competitive environment of today’s Internet-only vendors, customers expect more functionality, features and product value without sacrificing site performance or customer service. This session discusses how these goals must be met with razor thin budgets and vastly reduced head counts. It illustrates one Internet-based company who conquered these challenges by deploying a business intelligence solution based on an Oracle8i data warehouse on a SUN platform, while still using an ETL tool and use of Brio as their reporting tool. Besides working within a limited budget, they needed to insure a very scalable design to be leveraged as budgets grow. It is quite a success story.

Stop Just Reporting on the Business - Drive It!
(Originally presented at IOUG Live 2002)

This session discusses common pitfalls and the mistakes that have caused a vast number of failed warehousing solutions. It’s not because the design was necessarily bad, or the data bad, but we weren’t making decisions on the data in the warehouse. The session also explores why EDW and DSS acronyms have been replaced with CIF and BI. Most failed designs did nothing more than move legacy systems from main frames to servers and didn’t go far enough to insure decisions were being made from the new repository. This session discusses the importance of how to leverage and design the use of actionable/alert management data. Attendees will learn how to reach ROI goals and improve the bottom line.
